This frame was oil gilded using 23 ct gold leaf. My client requested that the frame be water gilt. Unfortunatley it was originaly oil gilded over gesso and had not been regilded since the first time. This left me with the option of a thorough dry scraping followed by some rabbitskin glue consolidation. After several broken pieces were remolded with gilders compo, it was then oil gilded over its original gesso. Raw umber was used to age some carved areas whilst quick size was used to gild areas of high relief to mimic the burnished effect seen on most water gilt frames.
